Thursday was the last morning for a San Francisco mainstay at its old location, as the SF Flower Mart prepares to move from SoMa to the Potrero Hill neighborhood.
The San Francisco Flower Market has been in official operation for a century and has been located in the South of Market building at 6th and Brannan since 1956. After business on Thursday, the SF Flower Mart will close up shop in its old home for good while its vendors pack up to move to another neighborhood.
While the move has been a long time coming for flower sellers at the San Francisco Flower Mart, the transition from the SoMa location to the market’s new home at 901 16th St. has been bittersweet for many of those who have been here for years and years. are. even decades.
A man who told CBS News Bay Area he was 96 said he had been selling flowers in SoMa since it opened.
While some sellers said they were nervous about the move, Kilroy Realty was able to find a new parcel of land for the new state-of-the-art facility the market will transition to in the coming week.
“We’ve been here since 1956. No supplier likes change, but it’s a really exciting time for the market. We have a brand new, state-of-the-art building with loading docks that we’ve never had here before,” explains Jeanne Boes, the General Manager and COO of the San Francisco Flower Mart, from. “The market has evolved and changed over the years. We used to have farmers in the Bay Area bringing in their goods. Now we are a global market.”
As the last day of the market at the Brannan St. location came to a close, many vendors turned their attention to packing for the move to Potrero Hill. The location at 901 16th St. will open for its first day of business at the start of the new year on January 2.
