Sergio Perez’s father was rushed to hospital after the Red Bull driver passed out in his bathroom during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Antonio Pérez Garibay told the Mexican publication Average time “the shock of the accident” may have caused him to faint and his heart has since been monitored.

Perez and Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz both emerged unscathed from the battle for third place after a high-speed crash during the closing laps of Sunday’s race in Baku.

Pérez Garibay said: “Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the accident could be the cause. They are already examining my heart to see why I fainted.”

His comments were accompanied by a press release confirming that he had been rushed to hospital.

“Pérez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City, where paramedics immediately provided medical attention,” the statement said.

“He was rushed to a hospital in the capital, where he is currently under medical supervision and in stable condition.

“We thank you for your expressions of support and affection.”

A statement from Perez Garibay’s own racing organisation, Scuderia Perez, also confirmed that the 65-year-old remains in hospital for observation.

“Mr. Pérez Garibay is stable but remains in intensive care and is under constant medical supervision, with particular emphasis on his heart and other vital organs,” it said.

“The responsible specialists have indicated that his condition is being closely monitored.”

During Sunday’s race, Perez failed to finish on the podium, a feat he had not achieved since the Chinese Grand Prix in April.

With that, McLaren passed Red Bull at the top of the Formula 1 constructors’ standings and Pérez dropped to eighth place in the drivers’ standings with 143 points, no less than 170 points behind teammate and championship leader Max Verstappen.

His next chance to extend his own and his team’s record comes at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday.
