Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain possible as Kansas City faces another dangerously hot day

While improvements are in sight, hot and humid weather will make for uncomfortable conditions in the Kansas City area on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

“Another dangerously hot day is expected today (Tuesday) with highs in the low to mid 90s and heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees,” the weather service said on X, formerly Twitter.

The temperature in Kansas City is expected to reach 95 degrees by noon. By 8 a.m., the temperature was already 79 degrees with a heat index reading of 82 degrees at Kansas City International Airport.

Normally, temperatures in Kansas City at this time of year are around 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. east of the immediate Kansas City area and for parts of central, northcentral and northeastern Missouri.

Because it was so hot on Monday, the weather service asked people to post photos of their dogs keeping cool for National Dog Day.

Showers and thunderstorms are coming

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening and overnight across much of northern and central Missouri, including the Kansas City area.

According to the weather service, the greatest dangers from the storms would be gusts of 50 mph (80 km/h), small hail and short, heavy rain showers.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center has put most of the forecast area around Kansas City at marginal risk for severe storms, but the threat of severe weather should diminish.

“However, we can expect some small hail and microbursts,” the weather service said in its review of the forecast.

Relief from the heat is coming

The warm weather is expected to continue in the Kansas City area through Wednesday and Thursday, but it won’t be as dangerous as it was earlier in the week.

Temperatures will remain in the low 90s on Wednesday and Thursday, which is still above average for this time of year. Heat index values are expected to remain below 100 degrees.

A cold front is expected to move in Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing with it more chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cooler weather is expected after the cold front passes.

For Labor Day weekend, temperatures are expected in the low to mid 80s on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the high 70s on the holiday. Sunny weather is expected all days.
