Sheriff’s deputy attacked on escape attempt, van crashed outside Community Justice Campus

A deputy from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has been hospitalized after an inmate assaulted them in a jail van on Monday, stole the vehicle and crashed into a telephone pole, police said.

The attack was reported shortly before 11:30 am. The assailant, who has not been identified, gained control of the van after the attack and drove the vehicle out of the Community Justice Campus. The van crashed just outside the parking lot, in the 3000 block of Prospect Street.

Three officers arrested the suspect. The attacked deputy was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. The police did not immediately report their condition.

The suspect was also taken to hospital in stable condition.

Foley said there is no ongoing threat to the community and police are not looking for other suspects.

At about 12:35 a.m., police tweeted that Prospect Street between South Sherman Drive and South Keystone Avenue would be closed for the “next few hours” while officers investigate.
