According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy shot a dog after it bit and attacked a deputy in Coachella on Wednesday. It was not clear if the deputy who was bitten is the same one who shot the dog.
Riverside Animal Control transported the dog for medical care and to be quarantined, said Sgt. Wendy Brito-Gonzalez. The deputy’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Officers had been investigating a reported stolen vehicle in the 48-000 block of Van Buren Street in Coachella around 12:30 p.m. The dog ran outside when they arrived and then bit the officer, Brito-Gonzalez said.
“The dog continued to charge at the deputy and was struck by gunfire,” she said, without explaining which deputy shot the dog.
Brito-Gonzalez added that no one else reported any injuries. She said the sheriff’s department was investigating the incident and no further information was available Wednesday evening.
