VALLEY STREAM, NY — One person was killed and others injured shots rang out during a party Monday night on Long Island.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. at an event site near Ocean and Saint Johns Avenue in Valley Stream.

Witnesses said a group of people in their teens to early twenties were having a party when an argument broke out. They said they heard gunshots and screams as everyone started running.

“It was a quiet, peaceful night, maybe a little music. Not too much loud music. No violent music. No kind of energy like that. We were just here to have fun, at the end of the day. Before you know it , the good time turns into a bad night and they start to get a little violent,” witness Keith Joseph said. “Before you know it, I just see a few running. It’s usually a friendly neighbourhood.’

A neighbor said things have changed since the event space opened, causing some problems.

“Ever since some smoke shop opened up somewhere down the street, I feel like everything has gotten out of hand in the neighborhood,” she said. “I think someone was shot in that block last week too. Like I said, it’s just gotten a little out of hand.”

The Nassau County Police Department is expected to hold a briefing on the investigation at 11 a.m. Watch live streaming on CBS News New York.
