Simone Biles reached the pinnacle of gymnastics again, leading Team USA to gold in the women’s team gymnastics final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Tuesday.
Biles is now the most decorated American Olympic gymnast in history, with eight medals (five gold) to her name. The U.S. women’s gymnastics team — Biles, Sunisa “Suni” Lee, Jordanian Chiles, Jade Carey and newcomer Hezly Rivera (who did not compete in Tuesday’s final) — are now the fourth U.S. team to win an Olympic gold medal.
After facing major challenges at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, including a battle with the turns that forced her to retire mid-race, Biles returned this year with a mission to win gold. She playfully called Paris the team’s “redemption tour” after they won silver in Tokyo.
It was a nail-biting victory on Tuesday. Despite a minor setback when Chiles fell off the balance beam, team spirit remained high. Lee quickly restored their momentum, and as Biles completed her beam routine, her husband, Jonathan Owens, who had flown in overnight to support her, waved an American flag in joyous celebration. The evening culminated with Biles’ signature floor routine, a performance that showed no sign of her earlier calf injury.
Biles competed in all four team events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. While the win marks her first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she can easily win four more when she competes in Thursday’s individual all-around final, where her biggest challenger will be teammate Lee, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
This gold medal wasn’t just a win, it was a personal victory for Biles. Watch Team USA’s triumphant Olympic moments.
