Source: NFL considers Bosa fine over MAGA hat; no timeline for the decision originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The NFL is investigating fining 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa for a possible violation of its personal messaging policy, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on Friday, but there is no immediate timeline for when a decision will be made . Suspension is not considered.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones the NFL’s investigation first reported on Fridayciting a source, and that a decision will not be made until later next week.
Bosa wore a “Make America Great Again” hat on the field Sunday night in support of former President Donald Trump after a 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium. He interrupted NBC reporter Melissa Stark’s postgame interview with 49ers teammates Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Isaac Guerendo by pointing to the hat and then walking away.
In doing so, Bosa most likely violated the NFL’s uniform policy regarding personal messages, which states in full: “During the period on game day when a player is visible to the stadium and television audiences (including during warm-ups before the match, on the bench area, and during post-game interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying or otherwise conveying personal messages, whether in writing or in illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League Office, celebrating anniversaries or memorable events, or honoring or commemorating individuals, such as helmet stickers, armbands and jersey patches on players’ uniforms, are prohibited unless previously approved by the League Office which whatsoever, must relate to team or league events or characters. The League will not authorize any club or player to wear, display or otherwise convey messages via helmet stickers, armbands, jersey patches, mouthpieces or other items affixed thereto. playing uniforms or equipment relating to political activities or causes, other non-football events, causes or campaigns, or charitable causes or campaigns. In addition, such approved articles must be modest in size, tasteful, non-commercial and non-controversial; may not be worn for more than one football season; and if approved for use by a specific team, it may not be worn by players from other teams in the league.”
If fined, Bosa would pay $11,255 for a first-time violation of the policy. A new violation would cost him $16,883.
When Bosa was asked about it at his post-match press conference, he simply said: “I’m not going to talk about it too much, but I think it’s an important time.”
Bosa later posted a screenshot of him wearing the hat on his Instagram account.
Bosa has long supported Trump and was seen with the former president at UFC 299 in Miami in March. Trump is running for president again, with election day on Tuesday.
