Steelers QB Russell Wilson limited by calf soreness during practice 3 days before season opener against Falcons

Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson missed practice Thursday because of a stiff calf, three days before Pittsburgh’s Sept. 8 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that the stiffness was in the same right calf that Wilson had strained at the start of training camp in July. He said Wilson would likely undergo further evaluation “to take a plethora of precautions.”

When asked if backup Justin Fields would be ready to play against the Falcons if Wilson is unable to play, Tomlin indicated he was confident.

“If that’s the case, I’m certainly fine with that,” Tomlin said.

Wilson did not speak to reporters. He was initially scheduled for media availability on Thursday that was postponed until Friday.
