Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn is calling for immediate safety changes at the end of the 105 Freeway in Norwalk, which has been the scene of dozens of violent crashes in recent years.

Hahn says the abrupt end of the highway, which joins Studebaker Road, is extremely dangerous and must be addressed by California’s Secretary of Transportation.

“The way the 105 Freeway ends is dangerous and the intersection has become a crash magnet,” Hahn’s statement said. “Too many people have been injured or killed as a result of this poorly designed highway. I am asking the state to make safety improvements as quickly as possible to save lives and protect drivers and the Norwalk community.”

On Monday, Hahn sent a letter to Toks Omishakin, the state secretary of transport, calling for immediate changes such as additional lighting, signs and rumble strips on the highway leading to the terminus. She hopes they will act as a way to warn motorists as they approach Studebaker Road.

Her statement also noted that the medical building previously located at the end of the highway had to close due to so many cars crashing into it over the years.

“The end of this highway is poorly designed and will likely result in increased fatalities unless corrected,” Hahn’s letter said. “I hope that under your leadership, CalSTA will take swift action to make meaningful changes for the safety and well-being of our residents.”

In 2023, there were 12 “serious crashes” at the highway’s end, including two fatalities, Hahn said.
