The Dharavi redevelopment project kicks off in Mumbai

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) in Mumbai, India, is ready for construction as it has received the necessary commencement certificate (CC) for the 6.4 hectare railway site rehabilitation section.

DRP CEO SVR Srinivas confirmed that construction work on the plot in Matunga west of Central Mumbai will begin soon.

Srinivas told the Hindustani times: “We have received a CC for the railway section that is part of the project in the first phase. This has paved the way for the permit for rehabilitation and construction in the future.”

This urban renewal initiative was taken up by Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), a partnership between the state government of Maharashtra and the Adani Group, a diversified organization with a pan-India presence.

DRPPL now operates under the name Navbharat Mega Developers.

The project aims to redevelop one of Mumbai’s poorer areas.

In August 2024, Srinivas informed the news publication about the ongoing investigation into tenements, of which around 10,000 had already been assessed at that time.

He added that the total number of tenements would be determined once the survey was completed.

Srinivas had then said, “Dharavi is the slum rehabilitation project where both eligible and ineligible tenements will be housed. We need about 550 hectares of land to accommodate the ineligible tenements and we have applied for the same. We didn’t get one. of the country yet.”

The Adani Group secured the project in November 2022, with a commitment to invest Rs50.69 billion ($586 million) in the venture, which is estimated to cost more than Rs200 billion.

The project area covers 600 hectares, of which 296 hectares are intended for redevelopment.

The project aims to rehabilitate approximately 0.7 million residents in one of Asia’s largest slums, marking a milestone in Mumbai’s urban development.

The DRP also achieved a milestone by receiving a CC from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for construction of railway quarters on railway-owned land, the report said. Times of India.
