The German government supports plans for asylum seeker benefits on card

The German cabinet has approved new nationwide regulations that will allow states to use a payment card to provide social benefits to asylum seekers, sources told DPA on Friday.

Leaders of Germany’s states had already agreed to introduce the card in a bid to prevent asylum seekers in Germany from transferring money home or using cash assistance to pay smugglers.

But state leaders lobbied Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government to introduce new regulations supporting the use of payment cards, hoping the move would avoid lawsuits.

The payment card will now be explicitly included as an option in the German law on asylum seeker benefits. Sources told dpa that the cabinet approved a draft law to this effect from the Ministry of Labor on Friday.

The amendment still needs to be adopted by parliament.
