The Illinois Commerce Commission denies People’s Gas rate increase request

CBS News Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — The Illinois Commerce Commission denied this Thursday Volksgas’ requesting a rate increase of nearly $8 million.

However, the ICC did give the green light for an additional $1.6 million in emergency aid.

The proposed $7.9 million rate hike came on top of a $303 million increase that came into effect last December.

ICC staff and an administrative judge supported the rate increase. But Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, the city of Chicago and the advocacy group Illinois PIRG all opposed the increase, calling instead for no rate increase at all or a smaller rate increase, according to Illinois PIRG.

The advocacy group said during oral arguments on the case last week that ICC commissioners were skeptical of Peoples Gas’ arguments for the rate hike — noting that there were ongoing problems with the Peoples Gas pipeline replacement program, which the ICC approved last fall stopped and investigated, according to the interest group. to Illinois PIRG.
