With some parts of New York already seeing a noticeable change in color outdoors, the best is yet to come.

When is peak foliage in the Southern Tier, NY?

According to the Smoky Mountains 2024 Foliage Forecast Map, leaves in the southern tier should be at their highest color with Monday October 14thbut will have partial to near-peak colors in early October.

So while there is still plenty of time to see the leaves change color, the window between peak colors and past peak colors is short. According to the forecast map, past colors will begin in the southern tier on Monday, October 21.

Reports of leaf color change in New York

For the week of Wednesday, September 25 to Tuesday, October 1, New York’s Fall Foliage report predicts several changes in the Southern Tier.

  • In Broome Countycolor reports show a 25% change in Binghamton, with leaves shifting to bright reds and yellows.

  • In Chenango Countythe report indicates a bigger change than Broome, with a 45% shift with colors ranging from red and yellow to brown and orange.

  • In Chemung Provincethe report shows a small change in Elmira, with a 20% shift to different colors.

  • In Delaware CountyAccording to the report, there is a much bigger shift, with a 65% change in Delhi and a 50% change in Colchester across a wide range of colours.

  • Steuben County shows a report of 40% change in the cities of Corning, Hammondsport and Hornell, with red, yellow and orange shining through.

  • Tioga County shows only a small change of 5%, with some orange and yellow visible in Owego, according to the report.
