Emergency crews responded to a water main break in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia on Friday evening, fire officials said.
Officials said crews responded to the water main break in the area of 28th and Dickinson Streets around 7:20 p.m. CBS News Philadelphia was on scene where water was pouring through the streets.
“I actually didn’t see the water main break,” said resident Dawn Tresoikas. “Someone said, ‘Hey, there’s a lot of water on the street.’
The Philadelphia Water Department is attempting to turn off the water, fire officials said.
“I came down and then I saw the water started flowing all the way,” Tresoikas said. “But I didn’t actually see the water pipe break, there are several neighbors who did.”
The Philadelphia Water Department said PWD has shut off a leaking 16-inch main and 28th Street is closed while repairs are planned.
It is unclear how many people will be affected by the break.
“It’s like a mini river flowing down there,” Tresoikas said. “I hope they can shut it down before the temperatures start, then it will be like an ice skating rink.”
