Details: The US State Department called the decision of the Russian court “an unjust conclusion of an unjust process”.
“For years, the Kremlin has tried to silence Navalny and prevent his calls for transparency and accountability from reaching the Russian people. By conducting this latest trial in secrecy and restricting its lawyers’ access to alleged evidence, the Russian authorities once again illustrated both the groundlessness of their case and the lack of due process for those who dare to criticize the regime.”
The United States called for the immediate release of Navalny and other Russian political prisoners and an end to repression against independent voices in Russia.
On Friday, August 4, the Moscow court sentenced Navalny to an additional 19 years in prison in the so-called case of creating an “extremist community”. This is the first case related to his political activities. The articles of indictment included “financing extremism” and “rehabilitating Nazism”.
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned a Moscow court ruling that sentenced Navalny to an additional 19 years in prison for creating an “extremist community”.
