The Volusia County Emergency Operations Center is getting upgrades

The Volusia County Emergency Operations Center is getting a $5 million, 4,500-square-foot expansion.

The county said the current facility on Tiger Bay Road in Daytona Beach needs more space to handle major storms.

The EOC has only been in existence for eleven years, but given the growing population and the impact of the recent hurricanes on the area, director Clint Mecham says it is time for improvement.

“In the event that we need to bunker for a storm, we have additional emergency management personnel. The sheriff’s office will be hiring to maybe double the staffing for the dispatch center in case people can’t travel and things get really tight,” Mecham said.

Mecham added that the expansion will allow for more training at the facility, and will give staff a more comfortable place to stay during storms instead of sleeping in offices. It will also include multi-purpose rooms and a media briefing area.

“We are also a backup for Florida State. It gives us the extra space if they have to move from Tallahassee, it gives us the extra space to accept that mission as well,” Mecham said.

The province hopes to have all the work done and have the EOC operational before the 2026 hurricane season.
