‘There really is something for everyone now’

Carrie Underwood’s journey of winning American Idol becoming one of country music’s most influential voices in 2005 didn’t come without challenges, no matter how easy she made it look.

“The biggest thing is cutting myself some slack,” the 41-year-old singer tells Yahoo Entertainment about finding balance on the road while raising two sons, Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5, whom she shares with husband Mike Fisher .

“The juggling is really for parents,” she says. “We’re running around trying to take care of ourselves. We try to take care of our children. We work, we juggle. But at the end of the day, that’s all of us, right?”

Underwood knows a thing or two about juggling. With eight Grammy Awards to her name, the singer has achieved success in various music genres – a rare feat for any artist.

The singer’s 2005 debut album, Some hearts, which blended elements of country and pop, became the best-selling album of all music genres that year, according to Forbes.

She thrived in those musical intersections and dabbled in new sounds before releasing 2022’s Denim and rhinestoneson the occasion of her return to the country.

Country music, Underwood says, has embraced a diversity of new sounds and well-known artists from other genres.

“There really is something for everyone now,” Underwood says of the genre. “One of the great things about country music, and this goes for music in general, is that each genre has really just broadened itself. If you like more traditional stuff you can find it. If you like things that seem more pop, you can find that. If you like things that can cross over into other genres, you can find something you love – and it’s all part of the same family. I always welcome that.”

She continued, “I love that people like Post Malone and Beyoncé and Jelly Roll and people like that are artists first and foremost. They interweave different music genres, and I think that’s really cool.”

Underwood is gearing up for a big year. She added more 2024 dates to her Las Vegas residency and also has upcoming tour stops. She also launched Carrie’s Country, a faith-based country and gospel channel on SiriusXM.

Despite her busy schedule, she tries to relax by exercising and staying hydrated. One of her secrets is taking BODYARMOR Flash IV Sticks with her everywhere. These are flavored powder sachets that you can pour into a water fight to boost energy and electrolytes.

“You can keep them in your purse, in your bag, on your desk or whatever you do,” says Underwood, who has been working with BODYARMOR since 2021. “It’s about fitting things in however I can, whenever I can. Just like everyone else, it’s about making good choices as easy and convenient as possible.”

That’s easier said than done, especially when Isaiah and Jacob are out with her when they’re not in school.

“We try to keep them a little more stationary because I think that’s where the bigger life lessons are going to happen. I want them to live a normal, quote-unquote life, whatever that means,” she says. “But that is the beauty of my work. I may be away for a while, but then I am also home a large part of the time.”

Family traditions are important in her household, she explains, and that sometimes includes watching new episodes American Idol.

“I try to keep up with it as best as I can,” she says of the singing competition show, which is now in its 22nd season. “I love it all. Ultimately, it gives people a chance to make their dreams come true.”
