‘Trap’ aims to catch serial killer, ‘Harold and Purple Crayon’ enters the real world, JoJo Siwa makes her horror debut

Hello friends! I’m Kelsey, your guide to all things pop culture for Yahoo Entertainment, and this is the The listour weekly roundup of what’s new and noteworthy. This week, my enthusiast colleagues have recommended a range of upcoming releases to watch, stream, listen to, read, and binge. I’m taking you through my favorites.

🎥 Fall lures us in

  • When: Fall is in theaters from August 2.

  • What to know: A father takes his teenage daughter to a concert, only to discover it’s all a trap to catch a serial killer.

  • We don’t know much more about the film than the basic idea, but screenwriter and director M. Night Shyamalan is known for his surprise endings.

  • Star Josh Harnett told the Associated Press that he attended a Taylor Swift concert helped him understand the story better.

  • Why I’m going to watch: Silence of the lambs meets “Eras Tour”? Sign me up.

🎥 Harold and the Purple Crayon brings imagination to the big screen

  • When: Harold and the Purple Crayon is in theaters from August 2.

  • What to know: Harold, a fairy tale character who can bring anything to life by drawing, enters the ‘real world’.

  • The hybrid animation/live-action film is being billed as a sequel to a beloved 1955 children’s book, in which Harold is 4 years old.

  • He’s all grown up now – and is played by Zachary Levi – but he still has a lot to learn.

  • Why I’m going to watch: Entertainment reporter Suzy Byrne told me that, although Inside Out 2 broke all box office records this summer, she can’t wait to see another fun family film.

🎥 Jojo Siwa gets her scream queen moment

  • When: #AMFAD: All my friends are dead is in theaters from August 2.

  • What to know: A group of college friends obsessed with social media rent a house together in preparation for a major music festival, but one by one they are murdered in ways reminiscent of the Seven Deadly Sins.

  • Jojo Siwa, perhaps best known for her time on Dance mothers and as a children’s entertainer she shows her dramatic acting talent in a key role.

  • I saw the film at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. Director Marcus Dunstan told me in an interview that he hopes it makes people think about how social media is a “digital update of the voyeurism” we see in so many horror classics.

  • Why I liked it: For me, summer doesn’t officially start until I’ve watched an over-the-top slasher film.

▶️ Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam zooms in on a true crime spectacle

  • When: Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam is streaming on Netflix.

  • What to know: This three-episode documentary series explores the story of Lou Pearlman, who founded the biggest boy bands of the ’90s and scammed investors out of millions of dollars.

  • The series investigates Pealman’s shady business practices, including fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.

  • Entertainment editor Alexis Shaw told me that the shadow of the supermanager hung heavy over the boy band phenomenon. And now we finally have answers as to what went on behind the scenes.

  • Why I’m going to watch: Backstreet Boys! NSync! One of the longest running Ponzi schemes in American history! This series has it all.

▶️ American heroes (and unconventional sports) get their Olympic moment

  • When: Watch Paris Olympics coverage on NBC, Peacock, USA Network, CNBC, E!, GOLF Channel, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports App.

  • What to know: This weekend marks the halfway point of the Olympic Games, but for many athletes the Games have only just begun.

  • Streaming editor Danica Creahan told me about some of the events she’s looking forward to this week:

  • Why I’m going to watch: Peacock has multiview mode enabled, so I’m always watching four things at once. Check out the full schedule of events here.
