Trump campaign office in Virginia burglarized, authorities say

Authorities in a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, said Monday they were investigating a break-in at former President Donald Trump’s campaign office.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies were called around 9 p.m. ET Sunday night and that security footage showed a person wearing dark clothing, a dark hat and carrying a backpack.

The campaign headquarters in Ashburn, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Washington, is rented by the Trump campaign. The state’s 10th District Republican Committee is also based there, the sheriff’s office said.

A person is wanted by authorities at a Donald Trump campaign office in Loudoun County, Ashburn, Virginia.

“It is rare for a political campaign or party office to be broken into,” Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said in a statement. “We are committed to identifying the suspect, investigating why it happened, and determining what was taken and what was left behind.”

A sheriff’s office spokesman said investigators would provide more details “as early as tomorrow” after identifying the person. Additional intelligence is now “investigating whether anything was taken or left behind and what the motives are.”

A spokesman for Trump’s campaign and the campaign of Mike Clancy, the Republican candidate for the House seat in the state’s 10th Congressional District, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday evening.

The report of a possible breach follows Trump’s campaign team’s report on Saturday that an Iranian group had hacked the site in June, around the time Trump was choosing his running mate.

The FBI said Monday it is investigating the alleged hack. A source familiar with the matter said the FBI office is also investigating attempted hacks of three Biden-Harris campaign staffers and former Trump adviser Roger Stone, which were first reported by The Washington Post.
