Trump uses mass brushes to remove independent inspectors -general from a series of agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Trump government has dismissed more than a dozen independent inspectors -general from government agencies, a major action to remove supervision of his new administration that some members of the congress suggest the violation of the federal supervisory laws.

The dismissals started on Friday evening and were immediately in force, according to a person who was familiar with the actions that spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details that have not been made public. The dismissals were carried out without giving the 30-day notifications congress about the removal of Inspector General-something that even a top republican said the law was violating.

“There may be a good reason that the IGs have been fired. We must know that if so, “said Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Law Commission, in a statement. “I would like further explanation from President Trump. Anyway, the detailed notification of 30 days of removal that the law does not demand to the congress, “said Grassley, R -iowa.

President Donald Trump was in Las Vegas on Saturday for a speech. The White House press office did not respond to requests for comments.

The role of the contemporary Inspector General dates from Washington after the Watergate, when the Congress installed within agencies as an independent check against maladministration and abuse of power. Although inspectors are presidential instructed, some presidents of both parties serve. They are not expected to be -party bound.

“Yesterday, in the dark of the night, President Trump fired at least 12 independent inspector -general -general -general at important federal agencies in the entire government,” said Senate -Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York on Saturday on the floor of the Chamber. “This is a hair -raising purification and it is an example of the lawless approach that Donald Trump and his administration take far too often as he becomes president.”

Schumer said that the dismissals “may be contrary to federal law” and helps to show that the move is “a striking sign that it is a Golden Age for abuse in the government and even corruption.”

The Washington Post, who first reported the dismissals, said that most were in the first term of Trump. Among those who were spared in the round of dismissal, Michael Horowitz, the long -term inspector general of the Ministry of Justice who has issued reports over the past decade, politically explosive criminal investigation.

In December 2019, for example, Horowitz published a report in which the FBI is fotted for surveillance -surrounding applications in the investigation into links between Russia and Trump’s 2016 Presidential campaign. But the report also noted that that investigation was opened for a legitimate goal and found no evidence that partisan bias had led research decisions.

Democrats blended the fired, with Rep. Gerald Connolly van Virginia, the ranking of the Huiscommissie for Supervision and Government Reform, and called it a “coup for overthrowing legally protected independent inspectors general.”

Connolly said the designs “an attack on transparency and accountability, essential ingredients in our democratic form of government” formed.

He also suggested that the move – on the fourth full day of Trump’s second term – could possibly release a series of positions that can then be filled with loyalists who are strongly sympathetic to the Trump government.

“Replacing independent inspectors -general with political hacks will harm every American that relies on social security, veteran benefit and a fair hearing at IRS about reimbursements and audits,” Said Connolly.

Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts called Trump’s actions ‘a purification of independent watchdogs in the middle of the night’.

“Inspectors -general are accused of eradicating waste from the government, fraud, abuse and the prevention of misconduct,” Warren placed Warren on X. “President Trump dismantles controls at his power and releases the way for widespread corruption.”

Nevertheless, in the past Trump has aggressively disputed the authority of independent watchdog groups of the office.

In 2020 he replaced several important inspectors -general, including those that lead the Ministry of Defense and the intelligence community, as well as the Inspector General Tapped Chairman of a special supervisory board for the $ 2.2 trillion Economic aid package on the Coronavirus.
