NASCAR Cup Series drivers at this weekend’s race at Watkins Glen are likely to be looking forward to the event with wildly mixed enthusiasm. Two playoff spots are still up for grabs with two races left in the regular season.
For strong road racers on the bubble – like Chase Elliott and AJ Allmendinger – this is another great opportunity. For drivers who don’t do very well on road courses who are still hoping to succeed – looking at you, Bubba Wallace – it looks more like a hurdle for an anything but Daytona night race to close out the regular season on August 26.

Bowl with Glen’s top drivers and the best bets
Chase Elliott’s only shot at a playoff spot is a win in one of the next two races, and given that he’s the winningest active driver on road courses with seven, he’s the favorite at Watkins Glen this weekend, according to BetMGM. Kyle Larson has won the last two races at Watkins Glen and goes into the weekend at odds of 5½ to 1. Current points leader Martin Truex Jr. has six career road wins to his credit and goes into the weekend 7 to 1. Tyler Reddick, who won at Circuit of the Americas earlier this season, goes into the weekend with a 9-to-1 odds.
Best odds of winning
• Chase Elliott +300
•Kyle Larson +550
• Martin Truex Jr. +700
• Tyler Reddick +900
Writing about the betting forecast earlier this week, Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg suggests good mid-tier odds for Chris Buescher (+2200), who has won the last two races on the trot, and Austin Cindric (+2400), who has achieved this season a pair of top-10s on road courses at COTA and the Chicago Street Race. If you want to fly the distance, Bromberg notes that Erik Jones (+25,000) has four top-10s at Watkins Glen in five career starts there.

Go bowling at the Glen weather
The forecast is partly cloudy for Saturday’s Cup Series practice and qualifying runs, but a 52% chance of rain looms for race day. NASCAR’s short-track and road-course packages include windshield wipers and grooved tires that can run on wet asphalt, but not in rain or standing water on the track.
