Two dead, six injured in mass shooting during Halloween party in downtown Orlando

Eight people were shot early Friday, two fatally, in a crowd celebrating Halloween in downtown Orlando, and a suspect was taken into custody, authorities said.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith told reporters that the injured had been taken to hospitals and were in stable condition.

The victims ranged in age from 19 to 39, he said.

The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old male. Smith said he was arrested last year for theft.

There was no word on his hometown, what he was charged with or the outcome of the other case.

There was also no indication why he might have opened fire.

The suspect is believed to be the only shooter, Smith said, adding that it was unclear whether he knew the victims.

Earlier, WKMG-TV, an affiliate of CBS Orlando, reported that dozens of people responded to the shooting scene.

Quoting police, the station said a 911 call came in just after 1 a.m. EDT on Friday indicating several people had been shot.
