Ukraine weaponizes hydrogen cars

Drones played a major role in the war in Ukraine, with both sides boasting victories with unmanned vehicles. We’ve highlighted the effective use of drones against Russian motor units and how the Russians have tried to build armor-piercing shells around them, similar to the strange turtle tanks that are also an attempt to protect against drone attacks.

Check out the luxury car Putin gave to Kim Jong Un.

But there’s a much deadlier and more shocking type of drone that Ukraine has apparently been using for some time, even though the innovative practice was only recently revealed. The military is using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to create highly explosive land drones that can destroy Russian forces in strategic positions.

Even more interestingly, Ukraine is facing equipment shortages as the war continues. The country is now using civilian vehicles to build homemade land drones equipped with powerful bombs. The land drones are powered by batteries and alternators from electric vehicles, particularly Teslas, Euromaidan Press reports, with the fuel cells of hydrogen cars such as the Toyota Mirai being used as improvised explosive devices.

In one example, the part of the Mirai’s fuel cell that was recovered weighed about 200 kg. When the plastic explosives attached to it were detonated remotely, the explosion resembled an airstrike. You can see the mushroom cloud that resulted from the explosion.

It is believed that the building hit by the drone strike was storing munitions, making the explosion even bigger. Either way, it is pretty incredible to realize that Ukrainian forces repurposed a Tesla and a Toyota Mirai to create such a deadly weapon.

Although terrible, wars can often be times of incredible innovation. Many vehicle technologies have been developed during major armed conflicts, from tanks to jeeps to nitrous oxide fogging engines, to name a few. We have a feeling that what Ukraine has done will have consequences for the future that we don’t even fully understand at this point.
