Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
New unemployment claims, a gauge for layoffs, fell to 12,280 in the week ending Jan. 3, down from 19,420 the week before, the Labor Department said.
U.S. unemployment claims fell to 201,000 last week, down 10,000 claims from 211,000 the week before, on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Georgia had the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 170.2%. New Hampshire, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decline in new claims, with claims down 57.3%.
