VALLEJO — Caltrans said it would reopen a stretch of Westbound Interstate Highway 80, which was closed over the Labor Day weekend, in time for Monday night commutes.
The closure began at 9 p.m. Thursday between the I-80/Interstate Highway 780 western interchange in Vallejo and State Highway 4 in Hercules. Caltrans said it would reopen before the Monday night commute.
The closure included the closure of all westbound lanes on I-80 on the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge, also known as the Carquinez Bridge. Eastbound I-80 lanes remained open, Caltrans officials said.
This is part of a series of closures on I-80 previously announced by Caltrans for repaving work.
Caltrans recommends that motorists traveling west on I-80 turn onto I-780 eastbound in Vallejo and continue on I-780 eastbound to Interstate Highway 680 southbound. Travelers can use southbound I-680 to reach westbound Highway 4, westbound Highway 24, or westbound Interstate Highway 580 to reach destinations in the central and southern Bay Area.
In addition, the transit agency will close nighttime lanes at various times this weekend to conduct work on the I-80/state Highway 29 Bridge Separation Project. These closures will take place on the westbound lanes of I-80, from Magazine Street in Vallejo to the Carquinez Bridge toll plaza.
Motorists traveling westbound on I-80 just east of the Carquinez Bridge toll plaza are advised to exercise caution as traffic is reduced to one lane on the freeway before the bridge.
