USA vs Japan Olympic Women’s Basketball: Score, Live Updates as Team USA Heads to Paris on 55-Game Winning Streak

The world’s most dominant women’s basketball team will take the court for the first time at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris when Team USA takes on Japan on Monday.

The U.S. team is seeking an eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal and comes into the competition riding a 55-game Olympic winning streak that dates back to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Simply put, it’s unlikely Japan will threaten that streak against a strong U.S. team led by WNBA stars A’ja Wilson, Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi. While veteran stars hope to continue Team USA’s dominance, star rookie Caitlin Clark was not selected to the team.

BetMGM has the US as a 20.5 point favorite over Japan.

  • That’s more like it! With their shooting faltering, the U.S. is having more success on fast break points, after back-to-back layups from Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart forced Japan to take a timeout. 30-18 U.S.

  • As the second quarter begins, Team USA continues to struggle with three-point shooting, with two consecutive misses by Kelsey Plum and Jewell Loyd not inspiring much confidence.

  • Team USA 22, Japan 15 after the first quarter

The US leads at the end of the first quarter, but it’s not quite the dominant performance they had hoped for.

It’s been a bit of a struggle for Team USA shooting-wise, with them only 1/7 on three-point shooting, and 10/21 shooting overall. Turnovers are also an issue for both teams, with five turnovers for the US and four for Japan. Definitely some things to work on in the second frame.

  • A’ja Wilson gets a great pass, but can’t get the ball in the basket because it bounces out twice. After some perseverance, she manages to shoot the ball.

  • Huge three-pointer from Japan’s Mai Yamamoto. The U.S. definitely has a height advantage in this game: Yamamoto is only 5’5″, while the tallest member of the team is 6’1″. Team USA, meanwhile, has only four players under 6 feet.

  • A great steal from Chelsea Gray, who passes the ball to A’ja Wilson for a mid-range shot. A strong assist from Diana Taurasi to Wilson gives the US a 10-4 lead. After a slow start, the US is finally starting to build up some steam on offense.

  • A few turnovers on both sides have made the game unexpectedly exciting and low scoring, with the score now tied at 4-4 after three minutes.

  • Team USA to take on Japan in Paris

And off we go! The United States with a few easy points from A’ja Wilson, who won the jump ball for Team USA.

  • Japan’s starting lineup

Japan starts with guards Saori Miyazaki and Mai Yamamoto, forwards Saki Hayashi, Stephanie Mawuli and Evelyn Mawuli.

  • As if eight consecutive gold medals weren’t impressive enough, the U.S. is also 72-3 all-time at the Olympics. The team’s last loss at the Olympics came in 1992.

  • Team USA drops its starting lineup

Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Napheesa Collier will start for the United States.

  • Today’s game is a rematch of the Tokyo 2020 final, where the United States defeated Japan 90-75 to take the gold medal. While the U.S. had a relatively easy win, Japan fought well and will likely be tough to tackle today. This Japanese team keeps the pace high and plays well from behind the arc.
