Utah QB Cameron Rising went to the locker room with a right hand injury 1:47 before halftime in the No. 11 Utes’ game against Baylor.
Rising was injured when he was pushed into the drink stand on the Baylor sideline. Rising had run to his left and had thrown the ball away just before it went out. As he was pushed out by Baylor defenders, Rising landed head first on a table full of drinks and coolers below.
Rising appeared to slam his right hand into a cooler on the grass. He stood up holding his right hand before heading to the locker room.
During halftime, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham told Fox that it was doubtful Rising would return. Rising returned to the sideline but did not re-enter the game. When he emerged from the locker room in the second half, Rising was wearing street clothes and had bandages on two of his fingers.
Rising was replaced by true freshman Isaac Wilson after an injury.
The seventh-year senior returned for 2024 after missing the entire 2023 season with a knee injury he suffered in the Rose Bowl at the end of the 2022 season. Since transferring to Utah before the 2020 season, Rising has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football when he’s on the field, throwing 46 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. But he’s also missed significant time due to injuries. In addition to missing the entirety of last season, Rising suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the first game of the 2020 season.
Utah’s offense suffered in his absence last season, when the Utes scored just 23 points per game. On Saturday, when Rising left the game, Utah led 23-0 and Rising had completed 8 of 14 passes with two touchdowns.
