Monroe police said two people vandalized graves at Hillcrest Cemetery last week.
On Saturday afternoon, police said they had received information about a group of people filming themselves vandalizing graves at Hillcrest Cemetery.
“I would say this is unusual,” said Lt. Morgan Malone of the Monroe Police Department. “This is the first video I have seen of this event in this cemetery. Especially for these individuals to post it themselves on their own social media accounts.”
A pot of flowers was overturned at the cemetery on Monday morning.
“It’s evil,” Malone said. “There is no excuse for this and the individuals must be held accountable for what they did.”
“You have so many people busy trying to find something to do. I don’t really understand why they would want to disturb someone’s grave,” said Phyllis Houston-Washington.
Houston-Washington said while her loved one’s graves were fine, she knows how stressful this situation was for many.
“For me, the only thing I could do was just go and watch. It was much more stressful for one of my nephews because he now has a lot of memories of his father and he is on vacation,” she said.
Jaykob Marquez Bracey was arrested for felony desecration of a gravestone.
According to police, the Department of Juvenile Justice was also contacted by a teen believed to be involved.
Anyone with information on Bracey’s whereabouts is asked to contact Monroe police at 704-282-4700.
