A man shot to death in South Jackson on Monday was previously convicted for his alleged involvement in the 2022 shooting of a 9-year-old child.
Jackson police issued a news release Tuesday afternoon saying Tristan Kimes, 20, was shot Monday in the 3500 block of Bowers Street. Police said Kimes died at the scene.
No suspect information was provided in the press release.
Public Information Officer Tommie Brown confirmed to the Clarion Ledger that Kimes is the same man charged in October 2022 in connection with the accidental shooting death of 9-year-old elementary school student Lily Bracey.
Authorities said the shooting occurred on Oct. 12, 2022, at the Graystone Hills apartment complex on Chadwick Drive.
Police said Bracey was returning home from school when she was shot in the neck with a gun by another 9-year-old.
Police say the fatal shooting was an accident and was intended as a game. The two children were reportedly friends.

Bracey was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment, but died at the hospital from her injuries.
Court records show police arrested Kimes, who was 18 years old, for giving the unidentified child “a loaded 9mm handgun” to play with.
According to court documents, a Hinds County grand jury indicted Kimes on the following charges:
-
Count 1, Crime of Neglect of a Child: Kimes’ deprived LB and RH, both nine-year-old children, of food, clothing, health care, or supervision appropriate to LB and RH’s ages, resulting in significant harm to both LB and RH’s physical, mental or emotional health.” Kimes “provided” RH with the gun that RH “accidentally fired.”
-
Count 2: Tampering with Physical Evidence: Kimes “intentionally destroyed, mutilated, concealed, removed, and/or altered physical evidence from the home where nine-year-old RH shot nine-year-old LB by removing the 9mm pistol that LB was shot from inside the house and hid (it) in some bushes…”
-
Count 3: Possession of a Stolen Firearm: Kimes obtained possession of a 9mm handgun that was “reported stolen out of New Orleans, Louisiana.”
In October 2023, Kimes pleaded guilty to the child neglect charge. Kimes was sentenced to 18 months in the Mississippi Department of Corrections on count 1. Courts 2 and 3 were remanded, per settlement.
