Video shows a Fayetteville man killed after trying to stop a carjacking

A video of a Fayetteville man killed last month after trying to stop a carjacking in Lumberton was shared on social media in recent weeks and shows the victim fired at least four shots at the perpetrator before he was deliberately hit by his own stolen pickup.

Jonathan Adam Lecompte, 38, was pronounced dead at a hospital after the confrontation on March 14, Lumberton police said.

Ricky Alex Driggers, 28, of Lumberton, is charged with first-degree murder, theft of a motor vehicle, felony fleeing to elude arrest and two counts of attempted common-law robbery.

According to police, a 911 caller reported that their vehicle was carjacked around 10:30 a.m. from the 4100 block of West Fifth Street in Lumberton.

While officers were en route to the initial call, additional information was received that the suspect was involved in a collision in the parking lot of Go Gas at 2605 W. Fifth St. and that he was attempting to carjack a second vehicle in the parking garage. front of McDonald’s.

Police said the second vehicle belonged to Lecompte and the video shows it to be a work truck loaded with a ladder and other construction equipment.

What happened in the video

The video, which is widely shared on Facebook, TikTok, Reddit, Instagram and other social media platforms, begins with a man in a yellow safety vest, believed to be Lecompte, pointing a gun at the accused car thief near a pickup truck stopped at the lanes in front of the door are parked. from a Lumberton Burger King at NC 72 and West Drive.

Although it is inches from his face, the carjacker ignores the gun and tries to get into the pickup when Lecompte fires a shot at him.

The car thief continues in the driver’s seat as Lecompte, within arm’s reach of the driver’s door, fires three more shots into the door before the car thief quickly reverses.

The person filming turns the camera back on Lecompete and another man on the road who begins running toward a grassy area as bystanders yell for them to get out of the way.

The truck then reappears on screen and speeds onto the grass, hitting Lecompte as he tries to escape.

While some bystanders scream, others run towards Lecompte, motionless in the grass. The truck was last seen in the video driving through the grass, driving through a fence and taking off on Olive Drive.

Police said officers arriving on the scene spotted the stolen work truck and chased it until the driver crashed on Selma Road near NC 41, nearly four miles from the Burger King.

Driggers is being held in the Robseon County Jail without bail.
