MINNEAPOLIS— Harrowing video shows a fire spreading quickly through a encampment in Minneapolis on Thursday.

The Minneapolis Fire Department confirmed the department responded to a fire at the encampment, located on the 1100 block of East 28th Street. Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In a video shared with WCCO, people in the camp are seen rushing to grab belongings and get away from the fire, which is quickly spreading from yurt to yurt. People are heard shouting, “Get everyone out” and warning that there are propane tanks that could explode.

John Gonzalez, who shot the video, says there are about 20 yurts in the encampment, holding between 60 and 100 people. Gonzalez later said he could hear propane tanks exploding. Meanwhile, a large plume of smoke can be seen rising from the fire.

“The camp is gone and completely engulfed in flames,” Gonzalez said.

As of 1 p.m., aerial photographs showed the fire had been largely extinguished and firefighters were working on hotspots.
