Voters in Miami-Dade’s primary took part in at least one historic race on Tuesday, as residents decided who will become the region’s first-ever elected elections supervisor.
Election supervisors used to be appointed. But the role is now a vote-by-vote role, due to a 2018 change to the Florida Constitution. The job involves overseeing the office that handles elections for 1.5 million voters in Miami-Dade, Florida’s largest eligible county population.
Over the past decade, Miami-Dade’s election department has built a reputation as a well-run department.
This year’s primaries feature three Democratic candidates vying to see who will take on Republican Rep. Alina Garcia, who faced no opposition.
Here are the election results:
Elections Supervisor, Democratic Candidate: Juan-Carlos Planas. He told the Miami Herald: “I am incredibly excited and I will start work in November. I look forward to bringing the message of protecting democracy to all the residents of Miami-Dade.”

Miami-Dade Tax Collector
Miami-Dade residents also voted for the position of tax collector, a person responsible for collecting all taxes reported by the county property appraiser.
Two Republican candidates are vying for the position, with the candidate running later this year against Democrat David Richardson, who had no opponent.
