According to Obama, Trump “hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he stepped off the golden escalator nine years ago.”
Former President Barack Obama launched a fierce attack on Republican candidate Donald Trump during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.
Obama took several swipes at Trump during his speech, calling him a “78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he went down the golden escalator nine years ago.”
And while Obama is known for his brilliant speaking style, it was the combination of his rhetoric and a suggestive hand gesture that made one of those jabs go viral.
“He’s been complaining and complaining all the time, and it’s only getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” Obama said of Trump.
“There are the childish nicknames. The crazy conspiracy theories. This weird obsession with crowd size,” he added, clasping his hands together to indicate he was referring to a small group. He paused after delivering the comment, looking down at his hands before staring blankly out at the audience.
The suggestive gesture prompted laughter from the audience and speculation on the internet.
“Was he just joking about his height?” wrote someone with the X symbol @monica_adams1 in a post about Obama’s speech.
“This will haunt Trump for the rest of his miserable life,” another user with the username @acnewsitics wrote in a post with a screenshot of Obama’s hand gesture.
Representatives for the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
This isn’t the first time Trump has faced a joke about his size during his campaign.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio remarked about the size of Trump’s hands at a campaign rally in Virginia.
“And you know what they say about men with small hands? You can’t trust them,” Rubio said.
“He referred to my hands, ‘If they’re small, something else must be small.’ I guarantee you there’s no problem. I guarantee it,” Trump said in response during a presidential debate with Rubio a few days later.
To be sure, Obama’s speech wasn’t just about ridiculing Trump. Obama reminded his supporters that Trump could still win the November election.
“Despite all the incredible energy we’ve been able to generate over the last few weeks, with all the rallies and memes, this is still going to be a neck-and-neck race in a country that is deeply divided,” Obama said.
