News Center 7’s Malik Patterson spoke to people about why they came to Herbert C. Huber Community Park.

More than a dozen people attended the vigil. They said they are still shocked about what happened on December 4.

“We felt this was something that needed to be addressed,” said Cindy Davidson, director of Huber Heights Community Cares.

She organized the vigil after the city’s Christmas parade on Saturday afternoon.

They wanted to make sure it was held.

“There was no way I could escape what had really happened here a few days ago. That was a tragedy in our city,” Davidson said.

>>PREVIOUS BUSINESS RELEASE: Teenage girl stabbed in local park in stable condition

As previously reported by News Center 7, Huber Heights police and medics were called to Herbert C. Huber Community Park on Wednesday around 1 p.m. for reports of a stabbing.

It started with an argument between two girls when one of the girls was stabbed, said Sgt. Josh Fosnight.

Video circulating on social media showed the fight between the two girls near one of the park’s gazebos.

The girl was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital in suspected critical condition, according to Fosnight. Huber Heights police say she is now stable.

The suspect was arrested in a neighborhood behind the park.

“It is heartbreaking to know that these young girls’ lives will be changed forever, and their families will be changed too,” said Shannon Teague.

She told Patterson that her daughter had been taught by the victim.

Davidson was pleased to discover the victim was in stable condition.

“There’s going to be a lot of healing mentally for students and for her and even for the young girl who stabbed her, but we believe it could have been worse.”

Davidson said they also prayed for all the students before the school year started.

They wanted both families to know they were there to support them.

“We are bigger than that. We are better than that,” she said.

Huber Heights Community Care said their next big event is in the spring for student suicide prevention.

The goal is to bring all students together.
