An estimated 610,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded in Ukraine since the war in Russia began, according to a British Ministry of Defence intelligence report.
The staggering casualty count, the latest Western estimate of Moscow’s significant losses in Ukraine, underscores Russia’s ability to absorb massive losses as the protracted conflict shows no signs of abating.
Last month alone, Russia suffered a daily average of 1,187 dead and wounded, the British Ministry of Defence said in its update, citing Ukrainian military reporting, which Business Insider could not independently verify. The figure is slightly higher than Moscow’s average daily losses of 1,140 troops in July.
The UK said the increase in Russian casualties was “almost certainly” due to Ukraine’s ongoing invasion of Russia, which has been underway for about a month now, and Russia’s continued advance towards the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk.
Ukraine has said that one of the goals of the invasion of Russia’s Kursk region was to divert Moscow’s troops from the direction of Pokrovsk. However, Kiev has acknowledged that this attempt to relieve pressure on this critical part of the front line did not take place.
“Russia continues to rely on mass to mitigate their personnel and equipment shortages,” the UK Ministry of Defence said in its update. “While Russian pressure across the frontline will continue over the coming month, their capacity constraints are likely to continue to reduce their ability to leverage tactical successes for wider operational gains.”
The Defense Ministry added that Russia is likely to continue averaging more than 1,000 daily casualties for the rest of September as its forces fight along the vast frontline. Moscow has suffered heavy losses consistently since the start of the summer.
In addition to personnel, Russia has lost an immense amount of military equipment since the start of the war. This includes nearly 10,000 armored vehicles, hundreds of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, and dozens of naval vessels, according to the open-source intelligence service Oryx, which tracks war losses on both sides.
War analysts have said that despite these losses and the high level of material wastage, Russia could continue the war in Ukraine for years to come.
