Warm sweaters and wool socks are expected as a cold, wet fall and a cold, wet, white winter are expected in Illinois and the surrounding area.

The almanac’s national outlook includes a “frosty autumn forecast” followed by a “wet, wintry whirlwind.”

What is the weather forecast for fall 2024 in Illinois?

What is the winter forecast for Illinois in 2024?

“Get ready for a wet winter storm!” the almanac writes breathlessly in its extensive weather forecast for the winter of 2025.

The almanac predicts a general “season of storms in quick succession bringing both rain and snow, with little rest in between.” The Farmers’ Almanac predicts that “the winter of 2024-2025 will be wet and cold for most locations” in the United States.

For Illinois and the rest of the almanac’s Great Lakes, Ohio Valley & Midwest zone, the forecast predicts the aforementioned cold, wet, and white winter. The neighboring North Central region is expected to experience a “cold, moderately snowy” winter.

Indeed, the almanac states, “The coldest temperatures of the season will be found from the Northern Plains to the Great Lakes region.” It adds, “The coldest outbreak of the season will occur during the last week of January through early February, when frigid Arctic air will cause a sharp drop in temperatures over most of the country, but especially over the Northern Plains.” And possibly the neighboring region of Illinois as well.

Above-average precipitation is forecast for the eastern third of the country, particularly the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley and the Midwest.

Winter officially starts on Saturday, December 21st.

About the Farmers’ Almanac

The Farmers’ Almanac, which dates to 1818, says its long-range forecasts are based on a “mathematical and astronomical” formula that includes “sunspot activity, lunar tidal activity, planetary positions” and more. It denies the use of computer satellite tracking devices, weather forecasting or, more defensively, groundhogs.

It also says: “Almanac fans say our weather forecasts are accurate 80-85% of the time.”
