What ‘The Nun II’ Post-Credits Scene Means for the ‘Conjuring’ Universe

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Nun II.

As it was in the beginning, so it will be in the end. That seems to be the big takeaway from the just-released film’s post-credits scene The Nun IIthe latest entry in the Magic universe of movies.

In director Michael Chaves’ 1950s horror sequel, Jonas Bloquet’s character Maurice becomes possessed by the spirit of the Demon Nun until, with the help of Taissa Farmiga’s sister Irene, he finally rids himself of this evil presence at the end of the film …or is it?

In the post-credits sequence, we are transported to the home of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Taissa’s sister Vera Farmiga, the leads of the 2013 film. The incantation and the two direct sequels. Ed is told that Father Gordon (played a priest in the Magic universe by Steve Coulter) calls and has an emergency. Ed looks meaningfully at Lorraine and then speaks into the phone. “Yes, father,” he says. “How can we help?”

Considering the placement of the series at the end of The Nun IIThe obvious implication is that Gordon is calling about Maurice and that his case will appear in the upcoming fourth episode Magic movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites.

“This will be the final chapter, so it’s a bit of a tease of that,” Chaves confirmed to EW.

If, as rumor has it, Last rites turns out to be the last film in the franchise to feature the Warrens, it’s fitting and perhaps inevitable that the pair tackle Maurice’s case. The character was already introduced in the first one Magic film, then played by Christof Veillon, via footage shown by the paranormal investigators during a lecture. That moment was also featured in the film directed by Corin Hardy at the end of 2018 The Nonwith Bloquet now playing the role.

“I think what makes this movie so cool is The nun so cool is that Maurice’s property was one of these central elements in the from the very beginning Magic universe,” Chaves says. ‘It was in the first MagicIt is absolutely a pivotal event in the entire universe.”

The Nun II reveals that Sister Irene is a descendant of Saint Lucy, a martyr whose eyes have become a sacred relic sought by the fallen angel Valak, who controls the demon nun. The film also strongly suggests that Lorraine Warren comes from the same lineage. This connection to Saint Lucy explains Irene and Lorraine’s physical resemblance and their supernatural abilities, while further teasing the possibility of the pair appearing together in Last rites.

The incantation films always have this family element and explore it in different ways,” says Chaves, who directed Vera Farmiga in the 2021 film. The Conjuring: the devil made me do it. “The sisters weren’t on set together, but they love being connected in this universe, and I think it tells a deeper family story.”

No official announcement has been made yet about who will direct The Conjuring: Last Rites. When asked if he would be interested in making another film in the Magic universe, Chaves deduces the question.
