What you need to know before you drive on Saturday

Roads in some parts of Louisville could be slick Saturday after a fresh 3 inches of snow.

Of Louisville’s 110 snow routes, many have been salted, plowed or both in the last 24 hours, according to the Metro Snow Map, and crews are poised to make more progress throughout the day.

The Louisville Metro Snow Team has been working around the clock in 12-hour shifts since Sunday and will continue Saturday, said Salvador Melendez, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works.

Melendez warned that roads could still be slippery in some areas and advised motorists to prepare for a longer-than-normal journey.

“We ask that you avoid unnecessary travel, but if you must be on the roads, please use caution while driving as they can be icy and slippery,” Melendez said in a news release.

As of Friday, the 200-member snow team was supplemented by 12 additional road crews through an emergency contractor, who will continue their work in Louisville throughout the weekend.

Morgan Woodrum, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 5 — responsible for the highway system in Jefferson and surrounding counties, said state crews worked overnight and will continue working all day Saturday.

With frigid temperatures not expected to rise above freezing on Saturday, Woodrum cautioned that salt may not be as effective.
