Will the Giants have a new QB in 2024? Daniel Jones’ knee injury makes it feel inevitable

The Giants are awaiting the results of an MRI, but it’s difficult to predict a different outcome. The look up Daniel Jones‘ face after his knee gave out and paralyzed him on the grass of Allegiant Stadium, told you his season is over.

What followed was anything but surprising: the Giants lost 30-6 to the Raiders. What’s? This team, a team with so much optimism about their future when it left Minnesota ten months ago, is now 2-7. Without Jones, and with a backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor while they are already in the wounded reserve, more losses are sure to follow.

New York’s grim present brings clarity to a future that was not thought possible at the beginning of this year. Now it’s inevitable.

That moment could very well have been the finale of Jones’ tenure in a Giants uniform.

“He worked very hard to get back,” the coach said Brian Daboll told reporters in Las Vegas. “And that’s a shame.”

Re-signing Jones wasn’t a mistake. He deserved that contract Joe Schoen with his heroics throughout 2022. Jones had nothing to work with outside of running back Saquon Barkley. The two joined forces to lead the Giants into the postseason with a 9-7-1 record and then beat the Vikings in the first round.

Improve Jones’ surrounding cast and he would become even better — the Giants weren’t alone in that assessment. They could have played hardball and forced him to let them play another year while playing under the franchise tag, but the financial obligation to do so would have prevented them from getting Jones to work more.

So the Giants gave Jones a four-year contract worth $160 million. They added players like tight end Darren Waller and receiver Jalin Hyatt. They took the tag they didn’t use on Jones and placed it on Barkley.

They were better. That would make Jones better. They sincerely believed that.

They were wrong.

“We can all do better,” Daboll said.

Jones’ knee will shorten his season, but his regression replaces any placement on injured reserve. The 26-year-old will pass 108 of 160 this season. That 67.5 completion percentage is a career high.

The problem is that Jones only threw for 909 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions in six games. Those numbers stretched over an entire season: 2,575 yards, six touchdowns, 20 interceptions.

The offensive line has been poor during Jones’ starts: He entered Las Vegas having been sacked 28 times. His playmakers, aside from Barkley, were still lackluster at best.

But the film showed a quarterback who routinely failed to elevate the play of those around him. The Giants might win with Jones, but not because of him.

You can live with that if there are no better alternatives.

That won’t be the case for the Giants in April.

“He is in my prayers and those of the entire team,” he said Tommy DeVito, who went 15 of 20 for 175 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. “We hope he comes back.”

The Giants would be selected fourth overall if the 2024 NFL Draft were held this week. They are one game out of the No. 1 seed, currently held by the 1-8 Cardinals.

Without Jones and Taylor, DeVito and the only options at quarterback Matt Barkleya 33-year-old career journeyman who signed to the practice squad last week.

New York could be destined to end up with the first or second pick. USCs are waiting Caleb Williams or UNCs Drake Maye.

Shoe won’t pass them both. He takes one. He will get his man. He then sends Jones to the highest bidder, assuming he can find one.

‘I can’t think of a worse scenario for a player’ Justin Pugh told reporters about his quarterback’s injury.

There are still people in the NFL who believe in Jones. However, it is more difficult to find someone interested in trading for him.

Jones’ resume is alarming. He’s already a quarterback with two neck injuries, an unfriendly contract and only one year of above-average play. Now you could potentially add a season-ending knee injury to the mix — an injury that won’t return Jones to full strength until 2025.

Schoen would once again have to eat up a large portion of Jones’ contract to make any trade possible. In theory, he could keep Jones and the rookie draft. However, that would be disastrous roster management.

“We have to look ourselves in the mirror and try to give more,” DeVito said of the floundering Giants.

Most celebrated the news of Jones’ extension. The quarterback, held back by a lack of continuity early in his career, eventually developed under competence. That progression gave the Giants an answer at their most important position. They could now concentrate on finding the rest.

Then Giants started this season 2-6. Jones missed a stretch with that second neck injury. He returned for this game against the Raiders in hopes of re-solidifying his status as this team’s franchise quarterback for the rest of the year – remind everyone what he is capable of. Erase any notion that Schoen needed his replacement.

Any hope of that ended when Jones planted his right leg on the first play of the second quarter.

Now it’s hard to find a situation where the Giants don’t have a new quarterback next year.
