The investigation began when police were notified around 2 a.m. after a fatally injured young man arrived at a hospital on Sunday, January 19, a police spokesman said on Monday. The man died from his injuries.

Crimes Against Persons Unit detectives determined the shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. Sunday near Pershing Drive and Gateway South Boulevard, next to the US 54 Patriot Freeway.

The name of the deceased man and further information about the shooting were not immediately released due to the ongoing investigation, police officials said.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to call the police non-emergency line at 915-832-4400 or they can call Crime Stoppers of El Paso anonymously at 915-566-8477 (TIPS).

Sunday’s fatal shooting follows a youth-involved shooting that left one person injured less than two miles away on Porter Avenue Friday afternoon. Two juveniles were arrested following an investigation by the EPPD Gang Unit.

Sunday’s killing is also close to the site of a shooting last summer. In July, one person was injured and at least two people were arrested in a gang-related shooting outside an apartment near Pershing Drive and Gateway South Boulevard. The case is pending in court.
