🌎 Paraguay stun Brazil in qualifier; James leads Colombia past Argentina

The CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers continue Tuesday night with a handful of big clashes. Here’s what happened.

Paraguay 1-0 Brazil

Goalscorers: Gomez 20′

Paraguay secured a famous victory over a struggling Brazil thanks to a stunning first-half goal from Diego Gómez.

Brazil controlled the lion’s share of the ball in the first 15 minutes, but the Paraguayan goal was barely visible.

Their lack of sharpness came back to haunt them just twenty minutes into the match when Inter Miami’s Diego Gómez fired home a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area, but it deflected off the post and into the net.

Brazilian prodigy Endrick barely touched the ball in the first 45 minutes, forcing Dorival Júnior to replace him at half-time.

Brazil still had most of the ball possession after the break, but they could hardly do anything meaningful with it.

Frustration seemed to boil over on the Brazilian bench as the match petered out. The loss leaves Dorival Júnior’s side in fifth place with just three wins from their first eight games.

Meanwhile, Paraguay climbed to seventh place thanks to their first win over Brazil since 2008.

Colombia 2-1 Argentina

Goalscorers: Mosquera 25′, James (P) 60′; González 48′

In a rematch of the 2024 Copa América final, Colombia took revenge by beating Argentina in a World Cup qualifier.

Argentina have largely had their own way in the qualifying campaign so far, but it was Colombia who scored first, eventually going into half-time ahead thanks to a well-taken short corner, allowing James Rodríguez to find Yerson Mosquera with a thundering header inside the penalty area.

The reigning world champions and Copa América title holders failed to register a shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

However, Argentina did not need long to get back into the game. Nico González put in a fantastic run and equalized a few minutes after the break.

But the parity didn’t last long. Colombia regained the lead thanks to a penalty from James just 12 minutes later, putting the champions behind the 8-ball once again.

The home side held on to their lead and held on to three vital points, reducing Argentina’s lead at the top to just two points.
