1.5 million bed rails are recalled due to entrapment and choking hazards; 2 deaths reported

May 30 – Medline Industries is recalling approximately 1.5 million adult portable bed rails that pose a risk of entrapment and suffocation because users can become trapped between the rail and the mattress, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.

There have been two reports of entrapment deaths associated with two Bed Assist Bar models. The deaths occurred in July 2019 and November 2023 and involved a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at an assisted living facility in South Carolina.

The recalled bed rails have model numbers MDS6800BA and MDS6800BAH. The models are identical, but one model was sold individually and one was sold in boxes of three units.

The bed rails are made of black metal tubing with a rounded black foam handle and a fabric bag. The “Medline” name and model number are printed on a label on the side rail support frame, near the vertical portion of the product.

Medline sold about 1.5 million of the recalled bed rails online between July 2009 and March for between $32 and $64.

The commission urges consumers to report related incidents involving the side rails at www.SaferProducts.gov.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Medline for a refund at 866-359-1704, recalls@medline.com or online at https://athome.medline.com and click on “Product Recalls” bottom of the page for more information.
