Video evidence helped Clovis, N.M., police investigators identify a 36-year-old man as a suspect in the shooting death of his grandfather’s wife, police officials said.
Police arrested Dany Lucero early Thursday morning and charged him with murder in the fatal shooting Wednesday of 78-year-old Virginia Montoya at her home in the 1300 block of Traver Street, according to a news release from the Clovis Police Department.
Clovis police officers responded to the home after an 80-year-old man called 911 and said his wife had been shot when she opened the front door.
Responding officers and emergency medical personnel discovered Montoya suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. She was rushed by ambulance to Plains Regional Medical Center, where she died.
Meanwhile, detectives from the 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit began investigating and found video surveillance that led them to identify Lucero, the grandson of Montoya’s husband, as a suspect in the case, the release said.
Authorities found Lucero early Thursday morning at his home in the 4100 block of Cottonwood Drive.
He is currently in custody at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
