HAUGEN, Wis. — Authorities in western Wisconsin say one person was killed and another seriously injured after a crash in a construction zone closed a highway for hours Wednesday night.

According to the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 53, half a mile south of 28th Avenue, at 5:23 p.m.

Initial investigation revealed that a minivan was passing other vehicles traveling northbound in the wrong lane when it struck a sedan pulling a motorcycle trailer traveling southbound.

Due to the work, traffic was in two-way mode on the northbound lanes of Highway 53, with demarcation posts along the double yellow center line, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities said the driver of the sedan died while the driver of the minivan was taken by LifeLink to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.
