1 dead after Knights of Columbus shooting Sunday

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday morning.

Daviess County Central Dispatch received a report of a disturbance involving “multiple individuals” at the Knights of Columbus venue in the 3500 block of East 10th Street at approximately 12:30 a.m.

According to Sheriff Brad Youngman, there was a “big party” in the hall before a fight broke out.

“Multiple people were in a physical altercation,” he said Sunday. “The security guards hired by the Knights of Columbus were trying to get everyone out, trying to break up a fight.”

Youngman said security guards encountered a 21-year-old Tennessee man in the parking lot of the venue who pulled a firearm.

“(The guards) drew their weapons and ordered him to put his weapon down, but he refused,” Youngman said.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the man unresponsive in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, until medical units from AMR Ambulance, Daviess County Fire Department and Thurston-Philpot Fire Department arrived on scene, according to a DCSO news release.

Youngman said one of the guards confirmed he shot the male suspect.

The male suspect was pronounced dead by AMR shortly after arriving at the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital emergency room.

The Daviess County Coroner’s Office went to the hospital, while detectives from the DCSO General Investigations Division arrived on the scene to investigate the circumstances.

According to the press release, “multiple pieces of evidence” were collected, including “what is believed to be the firearm used in the shooting,” and recorded as evidence with DCSO.

Youngman also said the incident was captured on cell phone video, which is currently being investigated.

The security officer and “over 15 individuals” were taken to DCSO for questioning, Youngman said. They “all gave fairly consistent statements that the suspect refused to drop his weapon.”

Youngman said security guards “have been very cooperative in the investigation.”

As of Sunday afternoon, Youngman said no one had been charged in the incident.
