1 dead after violent crash on southbound 405 Freeway in Carson

One person was killed late Monday night after a violent crash on the southbound 405 Freeway in Carson.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened near the Avalon ramps just before 10 p.m. Officers were initially dispatched to the area after receiving reports of a wrong-way driver who had crashed, but investigators believe the car was involved in an accident and spun around as a result of the impact.

This caused the vehicle to end up in the wrong direction of lane No. 1, police said.

They have not yet indicated whether the deceased person was a driver or passenger in the car.

CalTrans has been contacted for assistance in establishing a hard closure of all lanes while their investigation continues. All traffic will be diverted via Avalon Boulevard.

It is unclear how many cars were involved and how many others were injured in the crash.
