$1 million in federal funds to boost transportation projects in the Eugene area

The Central Lane Metropolitan Planning Organization is receiving more than $1 million in federal funds to support local transportation projects eligible for assistance under the Urban-Surface Transportation Block Grant program.

The MPO is seeking public feedback on three funding proposals in Eugene, Springfield and Lane County, with the comment period open until Nov. 7.

The projects and funding requested are as follows:

  • $549,387 for Retrofits of Chambers Street Seismic Bridge in Eugene: Seismic upgrades for the Chambers Street Bridge include structural strengthening to increase resiliency without complete replacement. The total cost of the project is expected to be approximately $3,945,412, and construction is expected to be completed in 2025.

  • $250,000 for 30th Ave. Active Transportation Corridor Design in Lane County: The design for an active transportation corridor on 30th Ave. is planned to include safety features for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Planned elements include medians, turn lanes, intersection improvements such as a roundabout at 30th Ave. and Eldon Schafer Drive, and a shared-use path on the south side of 30th Ave. The estimated total project cost is $1,288,734, with completion scheduled for 2027.

  • $250,000 for Franklin Blvd: Partnership to Rebuild and Revitalize a Springfield Corridor: To Align Franklin Blvd. with Springfield’s vision for a vibrant, walkable community, the intersection at Franklin Blvd. and Mississippi Ave. will be renewed for multimodal safety, including a roundabout installation. This project is funded in part by a Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and is part of a larger redesign with an estimated total cost of $33.88 million, which is expected to last until the end of 2028.
