MINNEAPOLIS — One man died and another was seriously injured in a shooting at a homeless camp in south Minneapolis Wednesday morning, police said.

The shooting happened in an alley on the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said. Responding officers found one man shot in the head and another in the neck. The man who was shot in the head, who was in his 20s, died at the scene, police said. The other man, who is in his 30s, was hospitalized but expected to survive.

Police found one weapon at the scene, but do not believe it was used in the shooting. They therefore suspect a third person was the shooter.

“We do not have a motive at this time, but we do have significant information about a potential suspect who could be our shooter,” O’Hara said.

The chief said this is “likely the third shooting associated with this particular camp” and that police will clear the camp once the scene is investigated.

“There has been far too much crime and violence this year, and far too much activity around homeless camps,” O’Hara said.

On Tuesday, city leaders — including O’Hara — met with frustrated community members to discuss public safety. The meeting came after a tragic few days in Minneapolis, where a 16-year-old girl was killed killed in a collision and a 14-year-old boy is shot.
