12-year-old boy believed to be youngest person convicted after nationwide riots

A 12-year-old boy is believed to be the youngest person to be convicted of a public order-related offence in the entire country.

The young man pleaded guilty to two charges of violent disorder after throwing a projectile at a police van and taking part in two separate incidents of unrest in Manchester at the city’s magistrates’ court on Monday.

The court heard that the youth, whose name cannot be released for legal reasons, was part of a group that gathered outside a Holiday Inn hotel where asylum seekers were staying on July 31.

Elsewhere, the wife of a Conservative councillor is also due to appear in court, accused of using social media to incite people to attack hotels housing asylum seekers.

The 41-year-old, of Parkfield Avenue, Northampton, has not yet pleaded guilty and will appear at the city’s Crown Court.

A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court for his part in rioting outside an asylum seekers’ hotel in Rotherham.

So far, 927 people have been arrested and 466 charged in connection with the recent unrest, a spokesman for the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said on Monday.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, 273 people were charged on Monday in connection with the riots.

The figure released by the NPCC is higher because it relates to allegations made solely by the police and does not involve the CPS.
